Will Your Employer Accept Online Degrees?

People get a degree in order to further their career. Either they want to get a career in a chosen field or they want to further their existing career. There is no other reason why anyone would invest the time and expense to getting a degree other than further themselves in the work place.

Many people who choose to get an online degree are either employed full time and cannot take the time off to return to school, or have young children who they cannot leave. Online degrees are a great way for these individuals to further their education without having to make supreme sacrifices. Getting an online degree for most people is the key to a better life. The key will only fit, however, if the employer does not change the locks.

While many employers recognize the fact that most people have to work while attaining their degree, others do not perceive an online degree as something of value. There is still a certain stigma when it comes to correspondence classes, although online education is quickly becoming more mainstream. Some older employers still reject the notion that anyone can earn a degree on the internet. However, many of these same employers also reject the entire notion of the internet.

Fortunately, theses employers are dying off and are being replaced by more progressive individuals who recognize the fact that more than 80 percent of Americans are online and that the internet has changed our way of life. Those who are watching the shift in educational values and are observing online graduates taking their place in the off line world in jobs that would not even have existed 10 years ago are seeing the trend move towards online education. People today way things quickly and conveniently and an online education is merely another means to that end.

Some employers dislike the idea of online degrees because they buck the norm. An employer can find out just as much about a candidate who attends an online school as those who attend an off line school. Anyone with an online degree should prepare themselves for questions that will most likely be asked regarding the degree on their job interview. They should be prepared to answer why they chose to attend an online education program instead of a traditional program. However, your poise and confidence at the job interview will be more important than where you earned your degree.

By attending a larger and more well known online education university, you will put to rest any doubts in the mind of your future employer. Chances are that you will not be the only person who has applied for a position using a degree from an online education program. The employer may be more familiar with the larger institutions than smaller institutions, which is a reason why many people tend to stay within the more well known online educational facilities such as the University of Phoenix or Capella University. These universities are pretty well known in the workplace and are not usually questioned.

Once you have your foot in the door and are scheduled for an interview, be prepared to answer as to why you chose to get an online degree. If the answer is that you wanted to keep your full time job or wanted to take care of your children, this will only work in your favor. While employers like those with degrees in the field in which they are to work, employers value those who are willing to work hard at what they want to achieve more than anything else.
